Long time member of Santee UMC, Linda Ketterer, is the Children, Youth & Family Liaison Lead Trainer for NAMI San Diego, (National Alliance on Mental Illness).  She has coordinated with Mental Health America of San Diego County to offer a FREE “Mental Health First Aid Certification Course” at Santee UMC on Saturday, August 26.
This course is specifically designed for adults living with and working with youth.
Mental Health America is dedicated to promoting mental health, preventing mental disorders and achieving victory over mental illnesses through advocacy, education, research and service.  “Mental Health First Aid” is a FREE 8 hour certification course designed to give participants the tools to respond to psychiatric emergencies until professional help arrives and to improve peoples mental health literacy.
“Mental Health First Aid” is a certified public education program that introduces participants to risk factors, warning signs and symptoms of specific types of illnesses such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, bipolar, and schizophrenia; builds understanding of their impact, and teaches a five step action plan to support someone developing an emotional crisis.
Former First Lady, Michelle Obama, is trained. “It really gives you the skills you need to identify and ultimately help someone in need.”
This course has been created specifically for adults working with youth. Youth workers, Sunday school teachers, church program leaders, pastors, parents & family members of youth, and other volunteers are encouraged to participate.
Learn more and RSVP at the Mental Health America website.
Santee UMC prays that, by partnering with NAMI and MHA and offering this course, we can raise awareness of the needs of our young people with mental illness and their families, especially within the church and our youth programs.  Education and preparedness will help us all continue to care for and be in right relationship with all of God’s children.
